Digital Medical Imaging and Artificial Inteligence are the future of Diagnostic Medicine.

The Medical Imaging Institute caters for professionals who seek hands-on medical training in Diagnostic Medical Imaging. On completion of our programs professionals are prepared to pass the licencing exmainations for Radiography Technologists, Medical Physicist and MRI Physicist. The imaging modalities covered include MRI, CT, Sonography and X-ray radiography.

  • Digital Medical Imaging

In modern Western medicine, Digital Medical Imaging plays a vital role in diagnosis and treatment of illness. Often when a condition is difficult to diagnose or the diagnosis is inconclusive, physicians rely on medical imaging. And in the culture of defensive medicine digital medical imaging provides a level of certainty that is unparalleled, giving patients assurance that their care is being expertly handled, and saving hospitals billions of dollars in damages due to malpractice lawsuits. Hence Medical Imaging professionals are an absolutely necessary inclusion in all healthcare teams.

The Medical Imaging Institute at Georgetown Biomedical University prepares Medical Imagaing professionals to offer expert care as Radiography Technologists performing duties in Image Acquisition and Quality Assurance, or Medical Imaging Scientists who perform research and development of new imaging techniques and new modalities, or Medical Physicists and MRI Physicists who paly a vital role in the day to day management of the diagnostic teams and imaging technology acquisition, installation, performance and upgrades.

Additional areas of specialization for Medical Imaging Professionals include Image Analysts who perform the vital Image Processing steps between the Technologist and the Radiologist who interprets the images and integrates them into the diagnosis. Both Radiologists and Cardiologists also benefit from specialized training in medical imaging since their functions are tied to image interpretation.

Medical Imaging is the future of diagnostic medicine and therapy. A career in Medical Imaging is challenging and rewarding, providing the satisfaction of being able render vital assistance to our fellow citizens in need. For example, the global COVID-19 pandemic demonstrates the importance of lung X-Rays is determing the extent of damage to the Respiratory tract and helping to determine which patients would benefit from the use of a ventilator.

  • Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been applied in several fields for more than 20 years but has recently emerged to capture the attention of the general public in applications like Automomous Driving, or facial recognition as it is used in national security. The power of AI is its potential to outperform human beings in regular tasks that require precision, accuracy, consistency and reliability. In fact, as AI develops it will replace human labor in many industries and fields where a computer can outperform a human. While those developments will bring efficiency and save cost, AI has the potential to save lives in medical applications.

AI is a branch of computer science that finds application in Medical Imaging. Fuzzy Logic, Neural Networks, Evolutionary Computation, hybrid Fuzzy Neural Networks and hybrid intelligent systems are AI techniques that have all been used in Medicine, (Amm R Coll Surg Engl 2004; 86: 334-338).In Medical Imaging, AI is emerging as a powerful tool in diagnostics, from recognition of abnormal cells in cytology to the detection of subtle differences in the metabolism between normal cells and cancer cells in Molecular Imaging.

Molecular Imaging is a new fontier in cancer disgnostics. It is premised on the idea that the metabolic profile of cancer is different from that metabolic profile of normal tissue. Hence an image of the metabolic profile is a finger print of the unique signature of normal and abnormal tissus. Using AI it is now possible to detect abnormal metabolism by comparing the metabolic profiles from molecular images of test tissus with normal tissue.

The transformation of Medicine is just around the corner as AI finds extensive application in diagnostic imaging, bringing greater accuracy and precision to diagnosis and treatmenmt as well as speeding up the process of pharmaceutical drug discovery and development. Medical Imaging specialists who have expertise in AI will be leaders of this transformation
